A Brief Background of Projects and Initiatives

Comprised of student leaders from Archbishop Moeller High School, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, Sycamore High School and Ursuline Academy, the NECC Youth Coalition is dedicated to building a Healthy Community for Healthy Youth by addressing contemporary adolescent health and social issues. Additionally, the Youth Coalition uses the Developmental Asset framework to educate and equip youth and the community with the skills, positive values, and support youth need to succeed.  Since 1989, the Youth Coalition has developed a number of projects to educate their peers and the community sectors about their respective roles in promoting community service, prevention, and positive youth development.  These projects include:

·         Youth Forum on Underage Drinking: The purpose of the Forum was to increase awareness about the underage drinking crises by educating adults about their roles, teen health issues, enabling behaviors, school and community policies, enforcement, and the influence of the media.

·         Student Exchange: This peer-to-peer education program provides a full day of workshops educating students about research-based information and skills for developing a student driven prevention plan to improve school climate issues in their respective schools.

·         Leadership Conference: This annual two-day peer-led conference focuses on developing our youth’s leadership potential through workshops, which address leadership dynamics, understanding diversity, conflict resolution, team building, goal setting, decision making and group dynamics strategies.

·         CAPA City Conference: Capa City is a leadership program that simulated a community in which youth strategize to solve community issues such as substance abuse and violence.

  • Physicians’/Dentists’ Initiative:  The Youth Coalition developed an educational brochure for doctors to distribute to the parents of their teen patients, urging them to initiate discussion with parents and patients regarding underage drinking.

  • Development of Prevention Resources: Youth Coalition members have designed various prevention resources, which have been distributed among local schools (for students K-12) and throughout the community.  These resources include educational videos, brochures, posters and a media literacy project for K-12 about the effects of alcohol marketing on youth.

  • Peer to Peer Social  Marketing Campaign: Is It Worth the Risk?   The campaign objective is to support the U.S. Surgeon Generals Call to Action to Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking.  Our campaign goal is to educate teens and increase their awareness about the risk of underage drinking.  Campaign materials include a fact card and posters highlighting the legal ramifications and the effects of alcohol on athletics, college and careers, and mental/physical health.

The Northeast Community Challenge Youth Coalition is a youth driven project of the Northeast Community Challenge Coalition (NECC).  The NECC Coalition, the second longest standing Coalition in the state of Ohio founded in 1983, is dedicated to promoting Healthy Communities ~ Healthy Youth. Funded by a federal grant, the coalition has launched a Community-Wide Asset Initiative to increase the number of protective factors (developmental assets) in our youth.
